6mm Adler Napoleonics - The Lost Project

Whilst counting up my figures for the #Greatwargamesfigurecount a few things saw the light of day for the first time in a very long time. I would guess that these figures have been in a box for 30 years or so.

I was after doing a different theatre to the 15mm Pennisula figures I was building at the time (5993 in so far) and had seen some pictures of these Adler Miniatures in a magazine and sent for a few. In true Yarkshire Gamer style rather than using the smaller figures to get more units I dropped my figure scale to get bigger units. The 64 figure Old Guard units are only slightly smaller than their 32 figure 15mm counterparts.

I remember being absolutely blown away by the detail on the Adler figures, sold as 6mm they were hugely different to the Heroics and Ros figures that were the standard of that scale at that time. A lot bigger than H & R and probably closer to 10mm they were (and still are) beautifully sculpted with bags of details.

There were big plans to do some big games with these but they never materialised, I kept building my 15mm collections of Napoleonics and never kept up the drive I had initially with the smaller scale. I ended up with smallish armies of French and Prussians and used them at the Leeds Wargames Club a few times but they went back in the box as I got my own games room and table and the 15s took over.

So with them not being used their future is uncertain. I do struggle painting the smaller scales now and the financial constraints that drove me to a smaller scale at the time are no longer there, I've collected enough 15mm to do most things so I can't see me adding to them. EBay?  Who knows, I'm always reluctant to sell stuff and there are some really nice figures in here. They will probably sit in a box for a while longer.

The great wargames figure count is done, I am still in therapy over the results, I shall post the result shortly.

For the pendants out there, yes I know the buildings in the background are 28mm Renaissance.

  1. OK bagsy first option if you get rid of them. I may have to post pictures of my Russian Borodino army at some point as that has just passed 9,000 figures..... Only 3 more divsions and some cossacks to go!!! PS do you still have 1/2 an unpainted French division that Paul Howard gave you about 25 years ago

    1. If you're still collecting I might keep them. That box is around somewhere I will try and dig it out next time I dare go in the haunted cupboard 🤣

    2. Si_W I would love to see some of your collection. I am trying to maintain my focus and paint my very large mountain of Adler miniatures. Do you have a blog? Thanks Richard

  2. One day I'm sure I'll get to play with them as well. By the way, they're nowhere near as good as yours but there are a lot of them :)

    1. The 6000 15mm Napoleonic figures usually stop that 😁 I just did French Guard and a few Prussians, enough for a small (for me 😉) game.

  4. You certainly brought them to life with your painting. Marvellous.
Is it worth keeping figures that one will never use? A tricky question to answer.
I did a count a few years back, in answer to the question from SWMBO, "How many figures do you have?" I underestimated pretty badly then, but have kept track ever since (and added 'quite a few' to the previous total). I will be interested to see what your census reports!!

    1. Many thanks James, the big reveal will be in a week or so, just sorting some photos out for some collection, like this one which don't have any. I have only ever sold two lots of figures and regretted both.

  5. 30 years in a box!? Time to get them onto the table or sell them on IMHO. Lack of storage space means I have to be ruthless with my figure collection, otherwise I would have kept a lot of stuff I've sold on over the years. But whether I would have gamed with them is another matter entirely!

    1. I've only ever sold two armies, both of which I regretted, my mid 1980s British Army which is now back in fashion and my Space Marines which i wish I had as my lad grew up so it's not gone well so far 😁

  6. I love Adler figures and these are really well painted ones. I have far too many unpainted. But I have today come home from a 15mm game of Auerstadt and am now going to look for how many divisions and regimanets I would need to Adler's early Prussians .... aaargh
