Monthy Wargames Update - May 2025

After recent chats with a number of people I've decided to try and give the blog a bit more time and effort, for the last couple of years with visitor numbers dropping I lost interest and moved to other formats. I still think there are scope for blog posts so here we go again.

One of the most popular formats on the YouTube is the Monthly Update so I thought I'd see if it translates here, please leave a comment if you get the chance

NEW UNITS

First up is a unit of 32 x 28mm Elite Miniatures representing a Battalion of French Young Guard Voltigeurs from the Napoleonic Wars. A proper old school style unit with 8 figures on a 60 x 60 base.

The flag is from GMB and is massive for a Big Fanion, but I love Big Fanions and I can't deny it.

The other new unit this month is this Florentine Heavy Cavalry unit for the Italian Wars, 28mm Perry plastics with Petes Flags.

I also went a bit crazy with the buildings, making and painting 12 Charlie Foxtrot Models New World ones for a AWI Germantown game at Partizan

TWERK IN PROGRESS

I always include a short piece on the latest twerk in progress, mostly to keep me motivated to finish it for the next month. On the bench at the moment are some 28mm Perry Prussian Landwehr for my Napoleonic Project. 24 done, 8 to finish

HOW MUCH

Purchases this month started with the Charlie Foxtrot buildings you can see above but I also managed to sneek in a cheeky Steel Fist Purchase picking up some of the New Swiss Front rankers.

FROM THE FRONT LINE

I attended the Partizan 2025 show and took along the 28mm AWI Germantown game which included the newly finished buildings mentioned above.

This is a game we put on at FIASCO a couple of years ago as a memorial to my friend Dave Parrott who passed away. He left all his figures to me including his lovely American AWI collection, which was featured in this game against my Brits.

We used British Grenadier and really cracked on through the day with the American centre collapsing in the late afternoon.

I always spend my time talking to people around the table, making sure that we don't ignore people and that allows the other guys to play the game and keeps the figures moving. It's not perfect but I get to chat to most interested people on the day whilst the game is played as opposed to a static display.

Down club we've had a few weeks of 28mm Ancients, using my Republican Romans against Harry and Andys Greeks.

I've been asked to help playtest a new set of rules, we did that for two weeks and we are now playing through again using MeG. I have had Mortem et Gloriam since Covid times and it kind of got lost in the lack of gaming

YARKSHIRE GAMER PODCAST AND OTHER STUFF

There have been a couple of New Podcasts, the first with Ray and Lee of Posties Rejects where we chat about their Wargaming as well as an in depth coverage of the Salute Show

The second show was a short update from Paul Thompson about the investigation into the WW2 Raid on the St Lawrence Radar Station on the Isle of Wight in 1943, with some pretty exciting discoveries.

Both shows are avaliable on all major Podcast hosts, simply search for Yarkshire Gamer you'll find it.

Also on the Utubes is a Troops on Parade feature on the Papal French Forces I built up for the Mentana Game.

So there you have it, a busy month, if you do read this far leave a comment and see what you think about the "reading" version of the monthly Update, if you prefer moving pictures I've included the Utubes version at the bottom of the page.

Until next time, Sithee

Yarkshire Gamers May 2021 Wargames Update

It seems to come round quicker each month, here we are at the end of May and it's time for the usual monthly update. As social media interactions continue to reduce when it comes to blogs they are massively on the up with other platforms, the golden age of the blog is well and truly over.

I've found these YouTube / Blog posts a good way to summarise what might have been 4 or 5 posts on the old way of blogging. I'm not ready to turn the lights out on the blog just yet, I still think it's the best format for scenarios and "thinking" pieces so hopefully people will keep visiting.

Above is the video review of the month, 2 new units completed, the Big Pike Block at the top of the page and a unit of Mounted Arquebus.

Whilst my Italian Spearmen nearly made it into the finished pile but didn't quite make it.

I've been a lot more frugal this month with purchases from Gringo 40, Steel Fist and Team Yankee to watch on the video.

Thanks for watching, back next month with another month update, there will be articles on my WW1 British Naval Collection and the build of the Italian Spearmen on the blog over the next week or so.

Yarkshire Gamers April 2021 Wargames Update

The monthly Update which started as a bit of a personal journal of progress at Yarkshire Gamer has proved surprisingly popular on the Utubes and today I have released the 12th episode meaning that the Updates have been going for a full year and it would be a shame not to toast that achievement with a glass of Whisky.

The update is slightly longer this month, there have been 4 new Italian Wars units painted.

Along with a work in progress on another unit. On top of that I have bought rather a lot of stuff, I, may have gone over budget !

I have got some dates pencilled in for the restart of gaming here as lockdown eases in May so fingers crossed it will happen.

Yarkshire Gamer February 2021 Wargames Update

There is loads of stuff going at Yarkshire Gamer but the regular features like the monthly Utubes update carry on. You can tell how busy I was with the front screen of the video having the wrong month on 😄

The Allied Italian Legion Project is nearing completion and the video features the new units and work in progress.

I've dropped some brass on a new river from The Last Valley and all I can say is it absolutely superb, I've ordered some more and I've a feeling that The Last Valley has become (unknowingly) the official terrain supplier to Yarkshire Gamer.

There has also been some actual gaming going on with a soon to be released Spanish Civil War game using our house rules. Its been a real effort to do but hopefully worth it when it comes out.

And on top of that the Podcast has begun, the Pilot Episode is available to listen to and the first full episode is recorded and edited and will be released on Friday, I'm really happy with it and hope that it catches on, so if you are a fan of Yarkshire Gamer I would love it if you would support this new adventure into Podcasting, by following the episodes on Podbean, Spotify etc

Everything done on YG is for the love of the game, I don't make any brass out of it at all.

The Pilot Episode is available through Podbean here

And the RSS Feed (which I don't fully understand yet !) is,

January 2021 - Yarkshire Gamer Wargames Update

Its that time of the month again, the monthly Utubes video is available to view. Its been a month of pretty much solid painting getting to grips with the 28mm Allied Italian Legion Project which as you can see from above is moving along nicely.

I've worked my way through a Command Base, the Velites (minus 8 figures that have gone missing), the Hastati and one of the two Cavalry units.

In other news I haven't bought much this month just a solitary vehicle for the Sweeney Project, a Mk1 Ford Escort.

On the gaming front I've been working on the rules for The Sweeney and produced some Evidence Cards for game play that I go through on the video.

All that and the usual moaning 😒 February will mostly be me ploughing through the Legion, after that I am going back into the Italian Wars for a short while.

See you all soon.

Yarkshire Gamer - November 2020 Video Wargames Update

We reach the end of yet another lockdown month, so what better than a video update on the goings on at Yarkshire Gamer.

There's lots of new stuff, some 70s buildings, including a rather famous car dealer, 28mm Italian Wars and 15mm WW2.

WIP this month is some 28mm Ancient Punic Wars Cavalry from 1st Corps, there's some new items in the games room including the rather swanky Triumph Dolomite below and a rather large purchase too.

It's been a steady month and November will see me building up to the Analogue Hobbies Winter Paint Challenge, lots of posts planned for December, I'll be releasing a feature length movie of the Great Wargames Figure Count, doing a feature on my riders of Rohan as well as a discussion piece on why the he'll have I got so many figures !

Yarkshire Gamer - September 2020 Wargaming Update

Another month has gone by and gaming in person just seems to be getting further away, I'm starting to think I won't be gaming for at least another 6 months so I'm preparing to just be a painter and collector for the immediate future.

I've put a video up on the Utubes covering the lockdown goings on at YG.

For those who just like pictures here are the new units for the month.

28mm Gripping Beast Hannibals Veterans

1/2400 Tumbling Dice WW1 Ships

15mm Plastic Soldier Company WW2 Kursk

I had a lovely 2 weeks in Scotland and picked up a lovely haul of stuff from Wonderland Models in Edinburgh.

Plus a visit to another great store in Glasgow, Static Games.

Thanks for watching further update next month.
