UPDATE 29TH MAY

Here is the voting to date in the Preliminary Round of the Yarkshire Gamer World Cup of Wargaming Pet Hates.

Some clear leaders with Overly Competitive Wargamers, Rules Lawyers and Cheats well out in front of the pack.

But also some surprises, who thought rebasing was popular 😄 and less people despised Fantasy History Cross Over Games than Hex Based Tiles 😆 The qualification race is pretty tight around the 16 cut off point.

A gentle reminder that this is fun, I've seen some "robust conversations" but only one 🛎🔚 so far on TMP (which is below current projections)

Poll open till Monday, top 16 go through to Rd1, there is still time to vote (or even change your votes) those topics which have been nominated after the start are often missed by those who vote early, so if you hate one of the newer nominations more than your orginal selection feel free to change.

Voting is on the Yarkshire Gamer Reet Big Wargames Group (Link above)

UPDATE WITH 24 HOURS TO GO

The voting in the Preliminary Round of the World Cup of Wargames Pet Hates ends tomorrow and here are the latest standings.

Little movement since the last update and as expected voting has dropped off since the initial surge, looks like there will be around 3,000 when it closes tomorrow.

Top six remaining same and we'll ahead, Display Games ignoring the public has been creeping upwards. The excitement is around the cut off point for the Preliminary Round, remember only the top 16 progress.

Currently Basing Tanks and Excessive Game Counters are joint 15th and just in the qualification spots with 45 votes. Primary School Blue Rivers and Tank Parks are the main contenders to knick a spot in Round 1.

Nominations are now closed, there is no chance anything getting anywhere near, there's some good stuff on page 2 and couple with no votes, which is one of my Pet Hates, if you nominate something, I have to type it in, at least you could vote for it FFS 🤣

Anyway this js your 24 hour notice to vote, or change your vote before it closes and the "I can't believe x didn't get through" window opens

  1. Warlord Games, Games Workshop, plastic ‘kit’ figures, game in a box, kickstarters, Facebook or any social media, Grimdark, expensive pre painted plastic tat. I could go on and on. Simon.

    1. Salute was brilliant this year 👍

    2. I didn't go to Salute this year but all the video and photo reports very much gave the impression that it is increasingly a show aimed at gamers other than historical wargamers - is that a false impression?

    3. I am quite clearly an old school historical Gamer and really enjoyed it, but them I was running my (award winning 😁) Battle of Mentana game all day. I discussed it in depth with Ray and Lee on the last Yarkshire Gamer Podcast, it's a mix that Salute will need to be cautious with in coming years but I thought it was a good mix. A major problem for them is that a lot of traditional Traders don't attend shows any more so newer other none historical traders take their place.
It was a really good event which I really enjoyed

    4. It’s because the traditional traders say it’s too expensive to go to Salute now. That and the people running it have a very bad attitude when dealing with said traditional traders. Simon

    5. I agree with Simons comments/choices wholeheartedly. Plastics being at the top of my list along with Salute which is just now overpriced and awful in its current format and location. Attendees are just treated like cattle. Can I add the start up gaming companies that release a game that then disappears after about six months to a year.

    6. Interesting, I was talking about the large number of traders who have retired from trade shows full stop post covid. Yes Salute is expensive but so is the hire of the hall. I definitely don't recognise the bad attitude comment, the lads running it over the last couple of years could not be more easier to deal with and in my experience are very responsive to feedback

    7. You are not a trader

      Delete
    8. Anonymous 1. It would be a lot easier if you used your name. Who are you and what is your agenda ?

      2. I don't understand your point, I don't think in this piece or anywhere else that I have said I am a trader. I have explained that a number of traders have recently retired or sold up, which is simply a fact. I have described the cost of the hall, which is eye-watering and how that would effect trade stand prices (it does) and I have explained my personal experience with the organisers.

      3. I am fortunate to have spoken to a number of traders through the Yarkshire Gamer and have experienced a wide number of views both Pro and negative towards the show, the traders I have spoken to post this Salute all had a good day.

If you have an experience then please share it, along with who you are and I'm happy to discuss. There is a big drop in traditional traders at all shows not just Salute, ERM, Maguster Militum, 1st Corps are 3 off the top of my head who have.

    11. I prefer to remain anonymous because I used to help run the traders at a large UK show and know many personally.
Zoe & Richard of Magister Militum stopped trading in January of this year. Many others like Andy Grubb of Grubby Tanks/SHQ/Redoubt/Kellys Heroes/Britannia etc are retiring. In Andy’s case next year.
A lot of traders have told me they no longer attend Salute because of the costs. Many have been on the receipt of poor service and attitudes from the organisers in the past.
You are not a trader, so probably are not on the receiving end of any of this. They are polite and friendly to you because you are putting on a game that costs them nothing but enhances their show. Just pointing out the hidden dark side of Salute.
Like Lee & Ray for example being given ‘press’ passes for the show. Forgive me here but they are not going to write anything negative about the experience because they will not get their free early entry next year.
I used to go to Salute every year when it was held in Kensington Town Hall and Olympia. Even at Olympia the organisers started p’ing off traders. I remember Two Dragons held a free entry alternative show near Olympia one year with a few other disgruntled traders. Excel is terrible, last time I attended was 2007 and only went because I also had free entry, I am guilty as well. I vowed with others never to attend again. They even had Nazi re enactors with their kids dressed as Hitler Youth and BDM. You could buy Adolf Hitler mugs and CD’s of Hitlers speeches and associated Nazi music. What were the organisers thinking? The First Battlegroup were well known as Nazi sympathisers. Just one example of a total lack of empathy from the South London Warlords. Some of us have long memories.

    12. Cheers Rob, I'm more than happy to chat with people about anything even when we disagree, the "you're not a trader" comment was a bit dismissive, Cheers for clarification 👍

    13. Anonymous - I had Lee and Ray on the Podcast for an in depth chat about Salute and although generally positive they had some negative thoughts as well, so your point about them not being critical is definitely off, it's there for everyone to hear.

I had a chat with one of the Salute organisers at Partizan and he was very happy to chat about the negative points we had brought up on the show. They can't please everyone but they can't be faulted when it comes to listening.

The current organisers of the show are not the organisers of 2007, to write a show off in 2025 on the back of bad experiences nearly 20 years ago doesn't make a lot of sense. I last traded at Salute in the other 1990s when I worked with Hallmark, I wouldn't base my opinion on the show today from that experience.

This year the organisers arranged a free car park space for each club, so my display did cost them some money, I think this was a small but wonderful gesture to those who put the games on for free, in contrast another Big Show in the UK wanted to charge me a fee for putting a game on recently !

As for the re-enactors I return to my previous point, the organisers today are not the organisers then. Only 4 years ago the show was a disaster, with Covid in the wings it was badly attended with trade and games not turning up, since then they have given it a full Human League (picked it up and turned it around) and got to a point this year where they were nearly having to turn people away due to capacity issues.

I'm more than happy to say what I think and I discussed a number of negative points around Salute and the careful balance between Historical and Fantasy gaming. I'm happy to put my name to it.

Cheers for sharing your thoughts, I think your wrong 😆 and the Salute you know is not what it is today.

    14. I agree with everything Simon and Anonymous say. Especially about Salute. I have not attended for years and years. It’s absolutely dreadful as a show. Paul
Oh I think the ‘you are not a trader’ comment meant you would be treated differently if you were and not putting on a demo game. Free parking at the show probably costs the organisers virtually nothing. The Excel is an awful venue in my opinion.

    15. Fair do's we aren't going to agree, I get you didn't like the Salute you attended years ago, not sure how that relates to todays event. Salute 4 years ago was dreadful, it was really good this year, it might be dreadful next year.
I don't really care how much the parking costs, that's not the point, it's the gesture, which isn't one made by the people you describe who, once again are different people 😁

    16. Today’s Salute is so far away from its heyday that it just does not interest me at all. It’s more like a game expo now than a wargames show. Again not for me I am afraid. The costs of attending the terrible venue is another downside.

Don't do facebook so won't be voting, I like plastic kits, think kickstarters aren't a bad thing, and also think Games Workshop has been beneficial, oh and I've liked going to Salute, the only reason I haven't gone the last two years is I've gone to Partizan instead and can't do both, good thing the hobby is a broad church!

  7. Salute is top of my list the others being expensive game in a box usually funded by kickstarter or similar where the company disappears after about 3-6 months.
Fad games you know the ones Hobbit jousting, Walking Dead or anything based on a current TV or film release as examples.
The great unwashed at shows, especially in hot weather.
Plastic kit soldiers and likewise resin.
Most 3D printing although I can see a place for it. It will just take over in the end. I just think most of it will be broken easily or just turn to dust in the end.
Complicated huge glossy rule books full of pictures and not rules.
Expensive GW tat and GW itself, the true evil empire.
As above Grimdark cr*p, Trench Crusade for example, really?
GW, more GW and did I mention GW?
People who wear supposedly witty gaming t-shirts
Woke nonsense at shows. Rude ‘staff’ at shows. General rudeness and entitlement from show attendees.
    Opinionated people such as myself.
Simon and anonymous must be my long lost brothers!
Mike the Jaded old boy gamer how I yearn for the good old uncomplicated days of the hobby. Now long lost unfortunately…

    2. Sorry just caught up with this. I also basically hate Salute. Let’s face it, it’s rapidly turning into a games expo and is not a wargames show anymore.
My name is Mike for the record.
I do not think the Salute dislikes above are all anonymous, seems Simon and Paul I think have added names to their comments.
Did see the blogger Dr Phalanx recently state on his blog that he will not be attending Salute anymore. Seems to be a thing now!

    4. I'll have a read of Dr Phalanx and see what they say, it is amusing that my posts about years of work on an army or battle get no comments and then a post that isn't even about Salute gets loads of anti Salute comments, how did you hear about it, is there an anti Salute group 😉

  8. Yes Salute definitely is top of my list

  9. I do not live in London anymore which is a good reason to never go to Salute again. It’s not even a wargames show anymore. Am unsure what it is now. I hate the thought of Salute. I hate the mention of Salute. I hate the endless blogs about Salute after it’s thankfully over. I hate the predictable magazine articles about Salute pre and post show. The show is so over rated it’s incredible. Excel is just terrible to get to and the show is a horrid experience. Chris B somewhere in Berkshire

  12. Ken - looking forward to seeing the revised pet hates figures. Hardly surprised at the current top three, which you could almost merge into one - but then we know what would win.

Salute is Marmite (Vegemite down under I suppose). Would it beat (either) Partizan for me (no)? Does it scratch an itch (well yes); do the Warlords make a serious commitment and do a great (and perhaps unappreciated) job - certainly so.

I'd just noticed something on your blog which I don't hate but which does make me glum - public painting balance sheets especially where the bloggers lead mountain has been reduced. Doesn't that break some important rule of physics... Farqs

    1. Cheers Andrew, it's always interesting to see how the 16 will get on in the knock out phase, we have had some big scorers in this phase before and they faded away later on.

Re the counter on the blog, I haven't kept it up-to-date for a couple of years but somebody asked me in an interview how many painted figs I have and I didn't know so I counted them, it was a lot of effort so I kept a record so I didn't need to do it again !
