Garibaldis Army 1860-7 - Troops on Parade

With all the World Cup match ups underway there's time for some figure stuff. I managed to put together a Troops on Parade review of the #28mm Garibaldi Collection on the Utubes. (Link at bottom of page)

Around 550 figs from the (Award Winning, but I don't like to mention it) 😉 Mentana Game

A really interesting collection to put together, Gringo40s were the mainstay of the army with 12 of the 20 Battalions. I've then needed to go "off piste" for other units using Perry ACW and BIF for 6 and 2 Battalions respectively. There are also a smattering of Shako 64, with the Artillery and some of the named officers. The video explains it all.

There are a couple of shows Mentana hasn't been to, so it may see the light of day again. I have long term plans to add a Bourbon Army and do the Battle of Volturno which would also require at least doubling these. But that's a years away with other projects underway in front of it.

This part of a project is always the best for me, flopping it all out on the table, makes all the time and the effort worth it.

Troops on Parade - Papal / French Army for Mentana 1867

I've put together a video covering the 28mm Army I put together for the Papal French Forces at the Battle of Mentana in 1867 available now on the Utubes

I've used figures from Wargames Foundry, Perry Miniatures and Gringo40s to put the army together and had to go to various ranges outside of the Risorgimento to get the figures I needed. A lot of them have been released by Shako64 since which is a real pain !

The French are from the Perry Miniatures Franco Prussian War range, part plastic part metal.

The Papal Zouaves were made from Perry ACW plastic Zouaves with Steve Barber head swaps

I used figures from The Perrys Triple Alliance to represent The OIC of the Papal French General Kanzler

I'll do a similar thing with the Garibaldi next week

Some size comparisons, Foundry, Perry, Gringo40s

Troops on Parade - 28mm WW1 Turkish Army

Welcome to another Troops on Parade feature here at Yarkshire Gamer, regulars will know that the TOP prefix to a post means that you are about to see one of the many of collections in its full glory. At the end of the day this is just an excuse to get a load of figures on the table 😁

This collection represents the Turkish Army of WW1 and is a regular on the table here in our regular Mesopotamia games (see the WW1 in the East tab at the side of the blog).

Our scale is 28mm (of course), the vast majority of the figures are from Woodbine Design Company, a part of Gripping Beast, links to the figures are below.

For rules we use the wonderful If the Lord Spares Us by Toofatlardies

This post contains lots of still photos of the figures, if you prefer a video version, then the link to that is below.

First up with the Photos is the Artillery, 2 bases from Woodbine and 2 from Tiger Miniatures, all 75mm Krupp Guns

After that we move onto a unit of 24 Lancers from the rather obscure if lovely East Ablaze range from Minifigs (yes that Minifigs !), link to the range below

And a unit of regular Turkish Cavalry this time from Tiger Miniatures slightly earlier Balkans War range.

The remainder of the Army is Infantry, consisting of 8 battalions.

There is a selection of High Command Figures

The regular Turkish Infantry, these units have 2 Command Figures and 4 companies of 8 figures.

Then there are 3 Arab Turkish Infantry Battalions, these have 4 x 6 figure companies, again with 2 Command Figures.

And to finish off a unit of Stormtroopers which have 8 figure companies, each unit has an attached Machine Gun base. The figures are all from Woodbine Design and can be found on the link below.

Hope you have enjoyed that little trip round my WW1 Turkish Army. Hopefully it will be on the table soon for our delayed Christmas Game. If you missed it first time round the video of the opposing British and Empire force is below.

WW1 British Naval 1/2400 - Troops on Parade

A few weeks ago I put together a Troops on Parade review of my 1/2400 WW1 German Naval fleet so it was only fair to do one for the British, in fact this was done a few weeks ago I just haven't had time to finish off the editing and release the thing on the world.

Above is an overview shot of the entire Project. 30 Dreadnoughts, 1 Pre Dreadnoughts, 12 Battlecruisers, 15 Armoured Cruisers, 27 Light Cruisers, 90 Destroyers, 2 Aircraft Carriers and an Armed Merchant for a total of 178 ships.

Above is a link to a video run through of the collection with a bit of general chat about the ships and the build of the collection.

The vast majority of the ships were done for our 100th Anniversary refight  of Jutland but over the last few years I've added a number of other ships that weren't present at the battle mostly to fill out gaps for an ongoing campaign.

It's been great putting together both collections but there is a sense of sadness now that they are finished. I'm thinking about doing Italian and Austro Hungarian fleets but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

The vast majority of the ships are from GHQ. There are quite a few WTJ ships which were early resin printed ship of really good quality. In addition to that there are a few C in C ships covering some of the large Flottila Leaders and some Tumbling Dice ships in the ranks of the Armoured Cruisers.

A close up of the Destroyers.

The Big Stuff

Hopefully with the end of Covid we can resume our WW1 Naval Campaign so these should be back on the table before the end of the year.

If you are interested in how I paint and base the ships I did a tutorial on them last year which can be viewed on the link above.

Hope you enjoyed that run through of the WW1 British Naval fleet here at Yarkshire Gamer

Troops on Parade - WW1 German Naval

This is the first time that I've covered one of my Naval Collections on Troops on Parade and with the first ever person to person game happening on the table this weekend the opportunity to do these features will drop away.

So first up is the WW1 Germans, 1/2400 scale and mostly GHQ although there are a few WTJ ships along with some Tumbling Dice which I used for the earlier ships. There is a video run through of the collection below.

I've put some choice photos below, full chat and descriptions on the video. The total fleet is 19 Dreadnoughts, 13 Pre Dreadnoughts, 7 Battlecruisers, 7 Armoured Cruisers, 19 Light Cruisers and 81 Destroyers for a total of 146 ships

The famous Battlecruisers including the Goeben which ended up in Turkish hands during the war.

A Nassau class Dreadnought

The Big guns Bayern and Baden

British up next.

Troops on Parade - Republican Romans

A few weeks ago I put up a post covering the build of my Allied Italian Legion for the Punic Wars, well about 15 years ago I started a Roman Legion using Gripping Beast figures and with a little bit of magic on their bases I have brought them up to the same standard as the new one.

So with two Legions in the bag they had to go out on the table together in full manipular formation. Below is a video of the Army as it stands (half Consular)

After I did the video I decided to draw up all the heavy Infantry and take some close order shots, so here is what 320 28mm Legionnaires look like.

This is what I do wargaming for, masses of closely packed 28mm figures, there is no finer sight !

I certainly found the availability of plastic figures for the white Legion made the Project a lot more affordable and in the reach of most. Above are some feature shots of the White Legion.

And feature shots of the Red Legion.

And a couple right down the middle !

Then its time for your close up Sir !

So there you have it, the end of the Ancients Project for now, back later in the year for some Carthaginians.
