Hi all,
I've been allocating most of my hobby time to painting over the last couple of months and its the Podcast which has taken a bit of a back seat, but with the upcoming Salute Wargames Show in that there London (which I have been busy painting figures for) only a couple of weeks away, I thought it would be a good idea to have a quick catch up with Martin and Phil from The South London Warlords to have a chin wag about the show.

In the hour of the show we catch up on everything that's new, everything that's the same and all the stuff in between.
I will be at the show waving my banner for Big Old School Historical Wargaming, as you would expect, there will also be lots of other people waving their banners for their areas of the hobby, which is wonderful to see. I can guarantee that none of those banners will be as big as the ones on the front of a certain wargames magazine !
Now the Analogue Hobbies Winter Paint Challenge is over I hope to have a bit more time to put some more episodes together, so if I don't see you at Salute hopefully you can tune into the next episode of the Podcast.

Does anyone still go to Salute? I mean the general public, not just traders?

DeleteSometimes Blogger plays up whilst logging on and you have to post as anonymous forgetting to add your name. I gave up on Salute in 2007. It was all just awful. I have trader friends who refuse to attend stating organisers bad attitude towards them, also the cost of attending shows, especially Salute. I guess Salute is marmite to a lot of people. One of my older friends stopped going as it physically hurt him walking round. All the best Simon J
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me how the Anonymous crowd ignore everything I do, a special on how Armed Forces Veterans are using the hobby to help soldiers cope after leave service, nothing. A special on a group of guys new to the hobby setting up a club to help men's mental help, nothing.
DeleteI mention Salute and a group of Anonymous people come on and post negative comments, it's sad they have enough energy to be negative but none to be positive. Don't get me wrong Salute isn't perfect & it's moving away from where I am in the hobby but it's trying to adapt to the modern hobby scene, I'm open to any constructive conversation about the hobby but at least I try and do something positive. I'm guessing you don't listen to the Podcast like you don't go to Salute
To be honest my interest in the hobby has waned over the past two years or even more. I even stopped going to my local club. I guess I am more of a collector now. Quite a lot, well actually most of the new stuff wargaming wise I have no interest in. I do not really do podcasts, might be an age thing. I think if I was a youngster starting in the hobby these days, I would find something else to occupy my mind. Simon J
DeleteOh as for Salute, it is very ‘marmite’ for people. Some love it, some loathe it. I think SELWG went under a couple of years ago after moving to a poor venue in inexplicably North London. Salute may well go that way from what I understand.
Podcasts are definitely not an age thing, I'm late 50s and a lot of my guests are old school Gamers and manufacturers like Trev Dixon and Pete Moreby.

DeleteBut it’s moving away from its core of wargaming. A mate of mine went last year and said it was still terrible. Maybe times have moved on but it’s not for my gaming fraternity or myself. Paul
DeleteIt's a shame you don't have time to comment on the positive shows I do about Mental Health etc but just come back every couple of years to have a go at Salute 🫡
DeleteI will not be going this year. It’s not really a wargames show now, but a ‘general’ games show. Really dislike the entrance queue. It has the feel of a cattle pen. Hope you have a great time though, Michael.

DeleteI really don’t get this criticism of Salute. I’m a long time historical gamer who started visiting Salute when it was at Kensington Town Hall and was virtually all historical. The Wargaming hobby has changed and encompasses lots of fantasy and sci-fI. They’re not my “thing” but Wargaming is a broad church and that’s a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI've been to Salute for the last 3 years with my Grandsons (now 8 and 10) for whom Salute is their highlight of the year. Yes they're Warhammer fans but they are very open minded. We joined the queue at 9.30am and left (with a very tired grampy) at 5pm! They loved the cosplay people and wanted photos with them, the Gamers Grass "build a base", the "speed paint a zombie in 20 minutes" stand, the nerf shooting arcade and playing four participation games - two fantasy and two historical. They don't discriminate!! They are the future of our hobby. When we got home, they wanted to play a game of What a Tanker, inspired by Joe Bilton's magnificent table.
As regards cost - under 16's are free (well done SLW) and yes the parking was £28 - however train tickets from Hertfordshire for the 4 of us (my son was there) would be far more expensive and having a car meant we could take a picnic and transport all our goodies home. Frankly, when I drive to Partizan it costs me net the same!
So if Salute is not your thing - that's OK. There are shows out there for you, However Salute is the Showcase for the WHOLE wargaming hobby and does a brilliant job of encompassing everything gaming and encouraging the future generations. The world is a different place now - look at Hollywood. For every traditional war movie there are 10 fantasy, sci fi and marvel movies. It's what the public pay for
Long Live Salute and roll on Salute 54! (by the loved your game too Ken - just couldn't get close enough due to the crowds!)
